The shelter and tent platforms are high on the Garfield Ridge, just northeast of the summit of Mt Garfield. In addition to the 12 person shelter, the campsite has 4 single and 3 double tent platforms. The water source is near the main trail and is very reliable. There is an AMC caretaker in the summer months and a fee is charged. The roof blew off the shelter in a violent storm several years ago and has been rebuilt.
Access is up the Garfield Trail from the Gale River Loop (FR 92) off of NH Rt 3, and north .2 miles on the Garfield Ridge Trail. On the other end of the Gale River Loop the Gale River Trail climbs up to the ridge near Galehead Hut. Then go south 2.1 very routh miles to the shelter spur path. In the other direction, it's 3.9 miles to the summit of Lafayette.
The Gale River Loop is gated in winter, usually from the end of November to May, but the dates depend on the weather. This adds an extra 1 mile ineach direction.
