Madison Springs Hut - 4800'
The original Madison Hut was built 1888, the first of the AMC's string of Huts along the Appalachian Trail. The current hut was built in 1940 out of the wreckage of the previous hut which had burned.The current hut sleeps 50 in several bunkrooms with a crew of 5 people. It is located between Mt Madison and Mt Adams, near Star Lake. The hut is open from July to September, a shorter season than many of the other huts due to the altitude and weather. The most direct route to the hut is up the Valley Way, from the Appalacia parking area on Rt 2. Other routes are the Osgood trail up Osgood Ridge and the Airline up Durand Ridge.
South of the hut along the AT is Lakes of the Clouds, while north, before entering Maine is Pinkham Notch Visitor Center, followed by Carter Notch.
