Looking north towards Adams
Edmands Col, 4930'
The low point between Jefferson and Adams is Edmands Col, named after J Rayner Edmands, a charter member of the AMC and one of the first to build graded paths in the Presidentials. A plaque to his memory was erected in the col.Several trails intersect in or near the col. The Randolph Path and Castle Ravine trail come from the north. The Gulfside trail, part of the Appalachian trail goes through the Col. The Edmands Col Cutoff comes up from the Great Gulf. The Cornice Trail cuts across to eventually connect with the Caps Ridge trail.
Just down the Cut-off is the Gulfside Spring with some of the best tasting water in the Whites. A mile or so down the Randolph Path is the RMC's Perch Shelter. The Col is known for high winds and bad weather in all seasons. An emergency shelter used to be in the col but was removed in the late 1970's due to overuse by too many parties planning on using it as a regular shelter.
